Artist's Bio

Joyce Crain's art has a flavor of the Pacific Northwest where she has lived all her life with her parents' Scandinavian families and later with her husband and two sons. They have been on San Juan Island since 2000, and much of her painting reflects the distinctive Puget Sound region. Wherever she travels she responds powerfully to the landscape, though her oeuvre includes florals, figurative work and expressionist abstracts, as well.

Joyce's life experiences have been rich and varied, as a wife and mother; as a part time administrator of her husband's two eye clinics; as a seminary student, teacher and singer in various churches; as a published poet; and always as a lover of visual art and a painter. After initial art training at the University of Washington in the 1960s, she has developed largely on her own, and has shown her work in local galleries as well as four solo and duo exhibits in her home towns of Auburn and Friday Harbor. Her work is in many private collections.

Joyce is a member of Plein Air Washington and is a registered artist at the Islands Museum of Art in Friday Harbor.
